Daylight is a free and natural source of illumination and should be utilised, where possible, as a way of reducing the use of artificial lighting within internal spaces.
It is also a light source rich in vibrancy, colour and energy. Unlike artificial light sources it is generally appreciated by all and there has been much research carried out on its positive biological effects on people. People apportion greater value to daylight than artificial light and lower levels of daylight are perceived as brighter and of greater quality than the equivalent or higher of artificial light. One of the characteristics of daylight is that it is not constant. Changing external illumination levels, cloud cover and sunlight penetration are key factors in human response and appreciation.
